Autism

Fusion SEND Hub have produced short videos, resources and information to introduce you to various special educational disabilities and difficulties

A brief introduction to autism

Sheffield Children’s NHS website has a wealth of information around Autism. The Child Development and Neurodisability Service is based at the Ryegate Children’s Centre where clinics and therapy sessions are provided, and they also provide therapy at home and in schools. Please follow this link for more information

The website has information about a range of services and support for specific areas of need. Many of the resources can be accessed directly without needing a referral or without a confirmed diagnosis, as they are based on need and not on having a specific diagnosis. More information can be found here.

It might be autism but……. have you considered other neurodevelopmental conditions that might be causing difficulties with learning. Click on the venn diagram for more information.

It’s important to listen to autistic people when we are discussing autism and considering the best ways to support our autistic children and young people in schools. We are delighted then to have Chris Bonello (of Autistic Not Weird) to speak at Fusion SEND Hub’s 2022 SEND summer conference. Chris is an autistic teacher, author and autism advocate. We encourage all people interested in knowing more about autism and ways to support and advocate for autistic people to follow him on Facebook and YouTube, and by taking a look at his website autisticnotweird.com

There are many engaging and at times challenging (in a good way!) articles on Chris’s website. A great place to start is this one: ‘So, you want to teach autistic students? Here are 12 tips from an autistic teacher.’: autisticnotweird.com/teaching
