Comprehension: Teaching Not Testing

Comprehension: Teaching – Not Testing (KS2/Upper KS1 – but is relevant for whole school approaches)  Delivered by Kate Woodhead and Louise Kelly-Scott Consultant Teachers in SEND Date:             20th October 2022 Time:              9.00am-3.30pm Cost:               £80 per person Suitable for: Teachers, Teaching Assistants and whole school staff – aimed at upper KS1/KS2 pupils Reading comprehension is the reason that we read, yet we often find that we are testing it through reading comprehension questions, rather than teaching pupils strategies to support themselves. This course is designed to:
  • explore comprehension strategies based on an active approach
  • encourages schools to work consistently across year groups and to develop a whole school approach
  • highlight the need for developing a consistent approach and looking at research
to support this, before working through a range of practical activities
  • encourage pupils to build up their understanding of literal and inferred information,
to refer back to the text to check their predictions and developing ideas
  • create a valuable resource to be used in school
  • aim to arm pupils with the necessary skills to be successful in more formal
comprehension exercises. To book a place on this course, please visit our Eventbrite Booking System: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/comprehension-teaching-not-testing-ks2upper-ks1-tickets-103707716572
